There’s a good chance some of it was generated by a computer and never sung by a human.

I described this as a scare line, so here are some numbers to show that there really is something to be concerned about. The music streaming service Deezer said it received around 90,000 fully synthetic tracks every day in July 2026.

So half or more of all new music uploaded to major streaming services is now AI-generated music. And when Deezer ran a blind listening test of hundreds of tracks, 97% of the people tested were unable to tell whether a track had been written by a human or not.

Listening to music that you think might be by a computer is not the hallmark of paranoia. And it’s not fun. If you pay for your music, then you have a problem too: where did your cash go?

If you are a musician, then there’s another big problem too: someone who has not spent years learning to play an instrument is diluting your royalties down to nothing. If you make a living from, say, curating a playlist or signing new acts, then it’s seriously, very expensive, too.

Of course, I did not want to publish an article full of “listen to the vibes” type of advice. So, I tested AI music detection in a real-world scenario.

I had my team run 7 songs through the AI Detector from Undetectable AI. They were all 4-minutes long pieces, and I had written down the true origin of each song before running them through the detector.

4 of the songs were generated by AI music generators, 3 were written and performed by humans, and one of the AI-generated songs had even charted already (although the algorithm didn’t know that when it ran the test).

Below you can find the screenshots of the results, followed by the context and method, the raw numbers including two surprises, and finally the red flags and where the tool fails.

Key Takeaways

Detection is not just a curiosity for nerds. It keeps scraped voices out of catalogs and keeps fraud out of the royalty pool. Deezer flags 85 percent of streams on AI tracks as fraudulent and pays nothing on them.

Synthetic audio still leaks. Pitch slides between notes too evenly, dynamics get squashed flat, the top end fizzes, and nobody ever stops to breathe.

Our test went seven for seven. All four AI tracks came back at 99 percent, and all three human records cleared at 12, 10 and 3 percent. No false accusation anywhere.

Concrete detail is not proof of a human. Two of the AI songs were full of specific, quirky images and still scored 99 percent, because what gives them away is how neatly everything resolves.

Hybrids remain the hard case. A person singing AI written words, or a person singing over generated stems, sends the detector two signals at once. Test the layers separately when that happens.

If you check audio often, running the AI Detector alongside the AI Voice Detector takes about a minute and settles the question properly.

Why AI Music Detection Matters Right Now

I also measured the scale of the problem at Deezer. We started to detect synthetic tracks in January 2025, and by the end of February 2025 we detected roughly 10,000 synthetic tracks per day.

By end of April 2026 this number had grown to 75,000 per day. For a short period in June 2026 this even grew to 90,000 per day, resulting in 2 million+ machine made songs per month being detected at Deezer.

First, musicians’ original recordings will get used to train those models, often without their knowledge or payment. Then, their work will be shoved alongside it in a search result. Not the theft of songs; merely the displacement of them by their robotic counterparts.

On the business side of things, things are getting downright disgusting. Streaming royalties are paid out of a single pool, so someone creating real music in a real studio would have their fair share of the money siphoned off by a bot creating and streaming fake versions of the same song in bulk.

That’s 85% of all streams of AI music created by Deezer reported to be fraudulent and thus demonetized, while 1-3% of all streams of fully AI music actually get played by humans. Read that and realize that most of the music being created by AI is not intended to be played by humans. It’s made to be played by bots.

But there are lots of people in the music industry whose role is to pick music, to distribute it, to get it to people. Labels. Agencies that find syncs for films and commercials. Publishers and curators and socities that collect rights on behalf of authors and composers.

For them, detection of AI-generated tracks is not a technical issue, but a business one. Will they be able to tell the difference before the track is released? Will they pull tagged AI tracks from recommendations and from editorial playlists?

(As of today, Deezer has decided not to include them in recommendations and in playlists, but since January 2026 it is also licensing out the detection technology to other companies: Billboard charts, for example, are now going to be filtered through this same detection. For now, detection has become plumbing).

Checking Metadata and Social Proof Before You Even Press Play

A lot of the time you can catch a fake act without hearing a note, because the giveaway is not in the audio at all. It is in everything around it.

The ghost artist profile

Real musicians leave a mess behind them. Blurry phone video from a half empty venue, a rehearsal clip, an interview on a podcast with forty listeners, a tagged photo from 2019 where everyone looks younger. AI acts have none of that residue.

What to look for:

Solid monthly listener numbers next to almost no social footprint, or accounts that were created days before the first release.

No live footage anywhere, ever. Not a soundcheck, not a festival tag, not one shaky fan video.

Cover art with that faintly plastic sheen. Warped lettering, hands doing something anatomically optimistic, faces too symmetrical, the same color wash across every single release.

Band member names that return nothing outside the artist page. No writing credits elsewhere, no session work, no history.

The Velvet Sundown is the case everyone points to, and rightly. A band materialized in mid 2025, pushed past a million monthly Spotify listeners, dropped multiple full albums in a matter of weeks, and had press photos with that unmistakable generated glow.

It eventually rewrote its own bio to describe itself as a synthetic project composed and voiced with AI. Plenty of people were fooled by the music. Nobody was ever fooled by the paperwork.

A release schedule no human could survive

Making a record is slow. Writing, tracking, mixing, mastering, arguing about the mix again. So when an account posts three albums in six weeks, or a dozen in a month, you are looking at a farm rather than an artist.

Same goes for a single name putting out country, drill and lo fi jazz in the same fortnight. People have a lane they cannot really escape. Models do not have one at all.

File tags and track details

If you can grab the file or open extended track details, read the metadata. Generator names survive the trip more often than you would think, sometimes sitting right there in the comment field or the encoder line.

Missing publisher info, no ISRC, a blank writer credit, a distributor known for bulk uploads. Any one of those on its own proves nothing. Four of them stacked up usually answers the question.

The artwork is worth a second of your time too, since a generated cover and a generated track tend to travel together. Drop it into the AI Image Detector and treat whatever comes back as one more piece of the picture rather than a verdict on its own.

Testing Songs With Undetectable AI’s AI Detector

Listening alone stopped working around 2024. Early AI vocals had a wobble and a smeared quality you could hear from across a room.

The current generation handles breath placement, consonants and reverb tails well enough that people who do this professionally get it wrong on a regular basis. That 97 percent blind test figure is not a comment on anyone’s ears. The target moved.

Which is why we use software for the first pass. The Undetectable AI Detector reads the linguistic fingerprint of the lyrics, returns a percentage and a plain verdict, and shows you which lines drove the call.

The AI Voice Detector takes the audio side and flags synthetic or cloned vocals. Between them you cover both halves of the question: what got said, and how it got sung.

Getting this wrong costs real money now. Release a track you assumed was clean and you can walk into a copyright fight, since the major generators are still working through litigation over what they trained on. Platforms have hardened too.

Bandcamp banned fully AI tracks, Tidal cut monetization, Apple Music runs voluntary tagging, Deezer strips tagged tracks out of recommendations. And if you used AI quietly and did not say so, that is a reputation problem sitting patiently until somebody else runs the check.

Our Step by Step Testing Process

We ran this in August 2026 with the detection toggle on. Under half an hour, start to finish, if you want to copy it.

Pick songs whose origins you already know, and write them down first. Grading a tool after the fact only works if you committed to the answers beforehand. We used seven, deliberately weighted so a lazy detector could not pass by guessing one way. Four came from different AI lyric generators, which matters because a tool that only recognizes one generator is not much use. Three were human records with paper trails going back years, including two by artists whose writing is heavily analyzed and widely imitated.

Run them one at a time. We pasted each lyric sheet in separately and let it finish before starting the next. Batching them together muddies everything, because you lose track of which passage caused which score.

Write down the verdict, the percentage and the highlighted lines. We screenshotted all seven, and every one of those screenshots is reproduced below, so the numbers are something you can go and check rather than something I am asking you to take my word for.

One thing I want to flag before you read the table. This run tested the lyrics, not the waveform. That is a real limitation and I come back to it at the end, because it changes how much weight the scores should carry.

Detection Results: Seven Songs, Seven Correct Calls

The scoreboard first, then what each result actually tells you.

Song

Source

True origin

Verdict

AI score

Lush Life, Bright Eyes

BoredHumans generator

AI generated

AI generated

99%

Standing at the Edge

FreshBots generator

AI generated

AI generated

99%

Porch Light Smile

AISongMaker generator

AI generated

AI generated

99%

A Million Colors

Vinih Pray, built with Suno

AI generated

AI generated

99%

You Get What You Give

New Radicals, 1998

Human

Human written

12%

Cardigan

Taylor Swift, 2020

Human

Human written

10%

Listen

Beyonce, 2006

Human

Human written

3%

Test conducted August 2026 using Undetectable AI’s AI Detector. The four synthetic tracks all pinned at 99 percent while the three human records landed at 12, 10 and 3.

Nothing sat in the murky middle, and no real artist got accused of anything. Sunrises, glitter in the rain, dreams running wild.

The rhymes never miss, the syllables sit neatly inside the meter, and across the entire song nothing actually happens to anybody. No street, no year, no name. That is exactly the biographical grain that normally reads as real.

It still scored 99, and the reason is what the song does with those details rather than whether it has them. The writing underneath did not.

<picture> </picture>

The Three Human Records

These are the results I actually cared about, because a detector that flags everything is worse than useless. I wanted this one in the set specifically because Swift is probably the most imitated lyricist alive. Her phrasing has been fed into every generator going and copied by thousands of writers, so if any human catalog were going to read as machine written by sheer statistical saturation, it would be hers.

It cleared comfortably. The writing keeps doing things a model will not risk. Images sit next to each other without being reconciled, small physical details carry emotional weight the song never explains, and the narrator says things that make her look worse rather than better.

There is also a specificity of era and class in the details that a generator smooths into generic nostalgia. This one is worth thinking about, because on paper it looks like it should be the riskiest human sample.

It is a big emotional ballad built on exactly the kind of vocabulary AI songs reach for constantly. Dreams, hearts, melodies, finding a voice. If you fed a generator the prompt make an empowerment ballad, you would get something with a similar word list.

It scored lower than anything else we ran. The difference is that the song is arguing with somebody. There is a specific person being addressed, a real grievance underneath, and the emotional temperature climbs because the situation escalates rather than because the arrangement got louder.

AI lyrics use the language of feeling. Real writers reach for common phrasings all the time, and a tool insisting on an absolute zero would be overfitting to please you. What you want is distance between the two groups.

Here the closest human sample and the closest AI sample were 87 points apart.

What Seven Samples Taught Us That Three Would Not Have

Adding samples changed the conclusion, which is the whole point of adding them.

The clearest lesson is that concrete detail is not proof of a human. Standing at the Edge and Porch Light Smile were both stuffed with the specific, slightly odd images that every guide tells you to look for, and both scored 99 percent. If you are checking by eye, that advice will fail you.

What actually separated them from the human tracks was friction. In the AI songs, every detail resolves cleanly and costs the narrator nothing. In the human ones, details contradict each other, go unexplained, or make the writer look bad.

The second lesson is that four different generators all produced the same 99 percent result. BoredHumans, FreshBots, AISongMaker and Suno are separate products with separate models, and the detector was not keyed to any one of them. That matters, because a tool trained to spot a single popular generator becomes useless the moment somebody switches.

The third is about false positives, and it is the reason we added Swift and Beyonce rather than three more obscure indie tracks. Heavily imitated writing is the stress test for a detector, since the imitations feed back into the training data. Both cleared.

That is the result I would want to see before letting any tool near a decision about somebody’s livelihood.

The Hidden Anatomy of AI Audio: Technical Anomalies to Watch For

Lyrics are one layer. If you want to judge the recording itself, these are the seams that generative audio still cannot quite hide. Use headphones. Phone speakers bury nearly all of it.

Spectral artifacts

These models synthesize sound rather than capture it, and the joins show up in the frequency content. Listen for a thin metallic fizz sitting over the top of the mix, worst on sustained notes.

Cymbals and sibilance give it away most often. A real cymbal decays raggedly into the room, while a generated one tends to smear into a wash or stop with an odd uniformity.

Phase smearing is the other one, where the stereo picture feels very wide and weirdly hollow at once, like the instruments are not sharing a space. If you can pull up a spectrogram, look for a hard shelf near the top where content just stops, which is a common leftover from the generation and compression pipeline.

Vocals a body could not produce

This is the most dependable category, because singing is limited by lungs and a larynx.

Things to listen for:

No breathing. Real singers inhale and you hear it in the gap before a long phrase. Synthetic vocals will sail through passages that would leave a person seeing spots.

Pitch that slides between notes with mechanical smoothness, missing the tiny overshoot and correction a throat makes on the way.

Timbre that quietly changes identity mid song, so the chorus sounds like a slightly different singer than the verse, or a harmony line does not match its own lead.

Emotion that follows the arrangement instead of the words. Intensity goes up because the drums came in, not because the line got heavier.

Consonants landing a bit too cleanly. People slur and swallow syllables when they are pushing. Generated delivery articulates everything with the same care.

Rhythm that never wavers

Human drummers are microscopically wrong all the time, and that wrongness is most of what makes a groove feel alive. Players nudge ahead going into a chorus, drag half a hair on a ballad, and no two snare hits land at the same velocity.

Generated percussion tends to sit dead on the grid with even dynamics, so it feels stiff even when it is technically perfect. Fills that repeat identically instead of varying are a tell. Hi hats with no accent movement are another.

After that, listen for the room itself. Real recordings carry the acoustics of wherever they were made, with early reflections and a natural decay. Generated tracks usually have reverb pasted onto something that was never in a room, and it reads flat and oddly close.

Practical Tips to Spot AI Generated Songs by Ear

None of this needs an engineering background. This is roughly the order I go in on a first listen.

Start with the voice

Find the longest phrase in the song and ask whether one person could sing it on a single breath. If not, and you hear no intake anywhere, that is the strongest single clue you will get.

Follow the emotion across the whole track. Does the singer sound like the sad line means more to them than the filler line? Synthetic vocals tend to apply one setting to everything.

Pay attention at the seams. Going into a chorus a real voice usually changes, with more air, more grit, maybe a crack. A tone that glides over that transition with no extra effort is suspicious.

Then the backing track

Wait for a loop. Generated instrumentals repeat segments identically more often than real ones do, and once you hear the join you cannot unhear it.

Ask whether the band sounds like it is anywhere. Real recordings have depth and space between players. Generated ones often feel pressed flat against the speaker.

Look for something that was clearly played rather than triggered. Finger noise on a guitar, a sloppy bass slide, a pedal creak on a piano. Those accidents almost never show up.

Then the artifacts

Turn it up during a quiet passage and listen underneath the instruments for fizzing, ringing or a faint metallic shimmer.

Let the last few seconds play out. Real fades expose room tone and noise floor. Generated ones hit digital silence too abruptly or dissolve into a smear.

Notice if the top end sounds veiled or muffled, which can mean the pipeline never produced real high frequency detail to begin with.

Then read the words

Do not just hunt for concrete detail, because our test showed AI songs can produce plenty of it. Ask instead whether any detail costs the narrator something or goes unresolved.

Watch for perfect symmetry. When every couplet balances, every contradiction is tidy, and no line runs long or awkward, a machine probably wrote it.

Ask whether the song risks anything at all. Humour, spite, a grievance it never settles. Models optimize for pleasant, and pleasant is itself a tell.

When something feels off, check it instead of arguing about it in a comment section. Paste the lyrics into the AI Detector, put the vocal through the AI Voice Detector, and see whether two independent signals point the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI detectors pick up on hybrid songs with real vocals and AI beats?

Usually, but expect softer numbers, because hybrids are genuinely the hard case. A detector reads whatever signal you hand it, and a hybrid hands it two that disagree. A human vocal over generated stems can pass a voice check while the instrumental fails everything else.

AI written lyrics sung by a real person does the reverse. The workaround is to stop asking one score to summarize the whole track. Run the lyrics through the text detector, the vocal through the voice detector, and judge the instrumental with the manual checks above. Where the layers contradict each other, you have found your hybrid.

Are AI music generators legal to use?

Using them is fine. What you can do with the output is the messy part, and it is still being worked out. Major labels have live litigation against the big generators over training data, and how that lands will shape what rights you actually hold in a generated track.

Separately, several copyright offices have taken the view that work without meaningful human authorship may not qualify for protection at all, which affects whether you could ever defend it as yours.

Platform rules are a third thing entirely and they vary wildly, from outright bans to demonetization to disclosure requirements. If money is involved, read your generator’s terms, read the policy of every platform you distribute to, and talk to an actual lawyer. I am not one, and none of this is legal advice.

Can heavy vocal tuning or autotune trigger a false positive on a real human song?

Yes, and this is the honest soft spot in acoustic detection. Hard pitch correction strips out exactly the micro variation a detector uses to recognize a human throat, so a heavily processed real vocal can start looking synthetic on the measurements that matter.

Grid locked production makes it worse. Which is the argument for never leaning on one check. In our test the lyrical layer held up regardless of production, and that is useful precisely because no amount of processing touches the writing. With a heavily tuned track, weight the lyrics, the metadata and the artist’s history above the vocal timbre.

Does a detector work if the AI lyrics are full of specific details?

That is exactly what we tested, and yes. Two of our four AI samples were written with unusual, concrete imagery, the sort of thing most guides say indicates a human wrote it. Both still scored 99 percent.

The detector is not counting how many nouns are specific, it is reading structural patterns across the whole text: how tension is built and released, whether contradictions resolve, how evenly the emotional weight is distributed. Those patterns survive the addition of colorful details, which is precisely why software beats eyeballing it.

What file formats work best when running songs through an AI detector?

The best quality file you can get hold of. Lossless formats like WAV and FLAC keep the high frequency detail and the noise floor where a lot of the evidence lives, so they give the cleanest read.

A 320 kbps MP3 is generally fine. Low bitrate files are the real problem, because compression adds artifacts of its own that can be mistaken for generation artifacts while stripping out the detail a detector needs.

Audio ripped from a social video is the worst case going, since it has usually been recompressed several times over. If a poor source is all you have, treat the acoustic result as weak evidence and lean harder on the lyrics and the context.

How do streaming platforms currently handle AI generated songs?

There is no agreed approach yet and the differences are stark. Deezer detects and tags AI tracks, pulls them from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists, and from mid 2026 started removing synthetic tracks that had gone six months without a stream or were tied to stream manipulation. Bandcamp banned fully AI tracks outright.

Tidal cut monetization. Apple Music runs voluntary tagging. Spotify has published a policy on AI involvement but has never released comparable upload figures, which is conspicuous. Deezer has also licensed its detection tech to other organizations, and Billboard uses it on the charts. All of this will keep moving, because the volume keeps climbing.

Final Verdict

What these tools do is read patterns that go by too fast to catch at listening speed, whether that is the acoustic signature of a synthesized voice or the structural regularity of machine written language, then hand you a number and a verdict.

Across seven samples that was quick, unambiguous and right every time: four synthetic tracks flagged at 99 percent, three human records cleared at 12, 10 and 3 percent, and no false accusation on the samples where a false accusation would have done real damage.

The limit is worth stating plainly, because overselling this helps nobody. We tested lyrics, and A Million Colors is the reason that still counts for a lot: a track that fooled a chart’s worth of listeners on production quality alone gave itself up in seconds once you read the words.

But an instrumental has no words to read, and a real singer performing AI written lines pulls the two layers apart. Software is your fastest first pass, not your last word. Put it together with the acoustic tells and the profile checks above and you will be right far more often than your ears would manage alone.

The bigger shift is that transparency is turning into the whole argument. When more than half the music arriving at a major platform each day is synthetic and almost nobody can hear the difference, the interesting question stops being whether you personally can tell and becomes whether anyone bothered to look.

Labels are spreading, platform policies are tightening, and audiences are getting noticeably louder about wanting to know. Checking is becoming ordinary manners rather than a specialist skill.

So check the next one that gives you pause.
