The second part of the study made participants rate the quality AI-generated and human-written writing samples without first disclosing each sample’s origins.

Sample 1: AI-Generated Blog Post

The first sample we tested was a 300-word AI-generated blog post about linoleum printmaking. To throw the detector off, we specifically instructed ChatGPT to vary sentence length and avoid obvious tells, such as em-dashes.

Despite the specificity of the prompt, the detector still correctly guessed that the piece was AI. It highlighted nearly all sentences, leaving out just two. 

The likely reason for the detection score was that the piece lacked depth. It outlined the steps efficiently, but failed to explain the reasoning behind each, which reflected a lack of experience with the process. The cadence also read as flat despite the instruction to vary sentence length. 

Sample 2: Edited AI Product Description

Next, we tested whether the detector could flag edited AI outputs. We used ChatGPT to generate an initial draft, then rewrote the content for more variation in sentence lengths.

The piece still achieved a high detection score of 99%, with all sentences reading as AI-generated. Likely, the edits were not enough to eliminate the piece’s predictable word choices and sentence structures. 

Sample 3: Human-Written Email 

Finally, we tested a piece of copy we knew to be human-written: a SemRush email promoting its AI-focused audit features.

Naturally, the AI text detector labelled it human-written, with an AI likelihood score of 1%.

On the surface, the text contains signs of generative AI use. The sentence lengths aren’t too varied, and the word choices are safe and predictable. However, each builds into the next, creating a sense of depth generative AI is usually not capable of. 

Steps for Spotting AI-Written Freelancer Work

AI detection should only be one part of your investigation. To strengthen your assessment, combine AI scores with human judgment and a review of the freelancer’s drafts, research notes, and processes. 

Step One: Use an AI Text Detector
